Saving Data When Online (Part 2)

SAVING DATA ON YOUR LAPTOP/PC OS (WINDOWS).
This is where persons usually have the biggest challenge, because some of them knows how to protect and conserve their data when using the internet on their browser but have not been able to close the mouth of the biggest data black hole which is their OS, most especially windows, windows are very aggressive when they come in range of a Wi-Fi connection or a 3G/4G data connection. They immediately start downloading every update for you – which is a good thing per say, because they want the best for you – but most times this is not what you desire so what do you do about it. You can try these methods to help you better.

Windows 7.
For those persons still using windows 7 they will not face of lot data problem because unlike windows 10, win 7 has far less features that needs data to work than win 10, but win 7 can still act as a data sucker when you are not careful with it, so to prevent high data consumption rate these are some things that you can do:
1. Set your windows update settings to “Check for Updates but Let Me Choose whether to Download and Install Them” with these settings your windows will never install update without you initiating the process.
2. When you are using the internet always open this two apps on standby
a. Task manager.
b. Network status/Wi-Fi status.
You will always be watching the network/Wi-Fi status from time to time to see if there is an abnormal use in the upload and download (sent/received) internet data usage, if there is any then using the task manager you will find the unwanted app that is causing the abnormality then close it, check the network status for it, if it has stop then no problem but if it doesn’t then you check back the task manager to stop any other app that you feel is causing this.

Windows 8/10.
These guys are just data crunchers when you don’t leash them because they contain a lot of apps that uses data and these apps are always wanting to be upgraded. But the following ways can be used to leash them successfully. In using win8/10 you have to pay close attention to network/data usage to prevent wasting your data on things that are not important, or using your internet data when you are not around.
1. Before connecting your internet hotspot to your laptop/pc on win8/10 do this first:
a. Put on your hotspot on your device (mobile phone/router/modern etc) but don’t put on the internet connection, just the hotspot.
b. Connect your laptop/pc to the hotspot and then go to settings and set the Wi-Fi connection as metered connection.
c. Then wait for some time, like 2 minutes then put on your data connection.
Once you set the connection as metered connection the OS won’t use it for any updates or notification unless it was initiated by you.
2. When you are using the internet always open this two apps on standby
a. Task manager.
b. Network status/Wi-Fi status.
You will always be watching the network/Wi-Fi status from time to time to see if there is an abnormal use in the upload and download (sent/received) internet data usage if there is any, then using the task manager you will find any unwanted app that is causing the abnormality then close it, check the network status for it, if it has stop then no problem but if it doesn’t then you check back the task manager to stop any other app that you feel is causing this.
3. You can also stop the updates or pause them also in the settings manually if you feel like been double sure.
4. Any apps that uses data has to be used with caution i.e. close them when not in use, and also to check that they are not being updated when you are using them.

SAVING DATA ON YOUR SMARTPHONE.
This is part that most person will like so much, that’s why I saved the best for the last.
Most persons browse a lot with their smartphone or not so smartphone, but how can they make their data last longer, before I will go deeper there are some things to keep in mind; it is that, most extreme unwanted data usage usually comes from app updates and followed by app notifications.
So, the main way to set up your device to prevent this is to:
1. Set up your device in your settings menu to “restrict background data”.
2. If you are using a limited Wi-Fi connection then you can restrict apps from using this connection. Which is like an advance – restrict background data – with this you are sure of reducing the way other apps interact with your network connection.
The previous methods concerning using the internet (with a browser) also applies to this (using the internet on your mobile device) which also include, watching out for pop up ads, watching out for videos that play automatically and also turning off the images in pages that you necessarily don’t need.
3. Use your mobile phone to browse when it is not too important to use your laptop/pc so as to reduce the data that will be used for that purpose.

There are other ways in which one can save data online and when using the internet, but these methods here has been used and verified by me. The main thing to know about these methods is that you have to be very sensitive to your data change and your data usage so that you will able to know when your data is been used abnormally, and this habit can only be built after studying your laptop/pc/phone continuously, that’s why at the beginning of the article I said that you need to put an extra effort so as to be able make maximum use of your data.
The last thing I will like to mention here above all else is that of self-control. That is, don’t be too curious when using the web so don’t you won’t end up wasting your data doing irrelevant things and also not to waste your time.
“So happy surfing and enjoy what you do by doing it well”
