Nar Hacks #5

Welcome to another episode of the Nar hacks, I hope you are always checking in on us and always joining us in this wonderful series. Remember that at Nar we are always here to serve, and we will always deliver on time.
A lot of us usually find it very hard to put on our hotspot for others, me for one don’t like it. But what happens when it becomes a necessity that we do so, if we ourselves need to use someone else laptop for some work because ours is not available, but what can we do in such a case, it then become such that we skip the work or take the risk. I call it a risk because it involves internet data, internet data is not easy to come by and as such most of us don’t usually have it in unlimited quantity in our phones, so as such, we can say that it is a risk because we can lose all out data by trying. But there are always risk around us to take and there are also ways to curtail the risk around us, so let’s see how we can curtail such a risk as this in this case.
What you have to do before you put on your hotspot for someone, so as to minimize the “risk” of over data usage will be our short discussion for today.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Let’s use a phone hotspot that is being connected to a laptop as our case study. An Android smartphone usually have 3G or 4G as the default phone Data connection network, which in most cases and depending on the network provider and also the location of the person can get download speeds between 2mbps up to 10mbps, which is quite fast.
Now taking our case study computer as having a windows operating system. For a strong user of windows, we must have noticed that windows operating system is a data churning operating system and they feed with greed when connected to a fast hotspot. And since ours is quite fast, they feed on it speedily and quietly.

WHAT TO DO
When we connect our fast hotspot connection to our computer, if the network is fast enough our computer can use up about 500mb of data in five minutes, so before you might realize that there is a problem with your data you are out of data already.
So a simple thing to do is this:
1. Put off your internet connection on your phone, then put on your hotspot. (Remember to always password your hotspot).
2. Connect your computer to your mobile hotspot.
3. Go to settings and set the Wi-Fi connection as “metered connection” (refresh after you have done this).
4. Open your task manager and put it to details mode, click on the network section, so that any app with the highest data usage will come on top.
5. Put on your data connection on your phone and study the task manager for any data-hungry app, which might have escaped the metered connection protocol.
6. If any irrelevant app is using your data unwantedly, close it or shut it down. After about 1 min, the operating system must have “calm down”. Then continue with what you want to do in peace.
Remember to check back the task manager so as to avoid unnecessary data usage escape.
These steps might seem long and stressful, but some laptops or computers have not being connected to the internet for a very long time, so any mine of data they come across will be used to the last stone. So if you don’t want yours to be a data mine then do well to secure it.

For me personally, I do this whenever I want to connect my hotspot to any computer, and I make sure I study the update and the download to make sure that nothing gets past me. Internet data is not really cheap and it is not easy to come by. And most times some of the updates that will be used are not even important for the normal functionality of the computer, so data that could be used for other things will end up being used for things that are not important.
