Know Your Hard Disk

The hard disk drive (HDD) is the part of the laptop that many of us knew back in school as rom, i.e. it is the secondary memory of the laptop/pc that stores files in a permanent way except if the file is to be deleted directly by the user. The hard disk drive is different from the disc drive which allows user to be able to play CD or DVD plates on their laptop. For me the hard disk drive usually called the hard disk is the most important part of a laptop because in it is contained everything (files) that is used to run the computer. Without a hard disk that contains the OS installation file the system will not boot, it will come up but will display several errors concerning the OS installation files.
There are many interesting things that can be known about the hard disk, the hard disk that is installed and contained inside the laptop/pc is usually termed as the internal hard disk drive while the one that is used outside the laptop/pc as an extra storage medium is usually termed as the external hard disk drive. Basically, the internal and external hard disk drive can be interchanged in their purpose, maybe you might just need to change the disk format, because sometimes external hard disk drive can be formatted with ex-Fat, or Fat-32 format, which sometimes cannot be used to installed some OS.
Also, a hard disk can be given either an MBR or GPT partition style; MBR-Master Boot Record is the most common format for older laptops and pcs it mainly offers the following specifications:
Usually formatted for hard disk drive of less than 2TB of memory.
Supported mainly For Legacy boot sequence. (windows).
Can only be used to create a max of 4 partition on it.
While GPT-GUID Partition Table is used for newer systems; it can be formatted for hard disk drive of more than 2TB of memory and uses the UEFI boot sequence. The legacy boot sequence is more universal than the UEFI because the legacy supports both old and new OS while the UEFI is only for newer version of windows OS.
So next time your laptop OS crashes don’t panic because your project work is inside or any other important file, because in so far as the hard disk didn’t fail your files will be safe and can be extracted successfully.

Some Of The Things To Know And Keep In Mind About The Hard Disk
1. The hard disk contains all your files and the systems files of your pc, so if your hard disk fails then the laptop will fail also – the laptop is not spoilt but can’t run again until the hard disk is changed –.
2. The easiest way to clone your system to another is just simply to take the hard disk from the old one and put into the new one then restarts the new laptop/pc and install relevant updates, if the two laptop/pc are different.
3. If your laptop OS crashes don’t rush to install a new one if your important files are inside, remove the hard disk from the laptop then use an external hard disk drive adapter to remove all your important file from the hard disk, before formatting the hard disk drive or trying to install a new OS into it, to make sure that your files are safe.
4. Creating an extra partition in your internal hard disk drive is a very necessary and important thing to do, this is because if you do this, you can be saving your important file to the new hard disk partition or partitions away from the partition that contains the OS, so that in case you need to upgrade or install a new OS you won’t be scared that the installation process will wipe your files away, this is because the installation process will only affect files in that partition or if there is need that the OS partition needs to be formatted due to path or folder or file error.
5. The hard disk is very fragile and does not need to be pressed upon to prevent the device failing, so preventing your laptop from falling and also not resting or placing stuffs on top is a good way to safeguard your hard disk.
6. The hard disk has a very long memory that is item that has been deleted from the hard disk can be recovered through different process, some of which can be achieved using special recovery tool.
7. The hard disk can also be used like a usb flash, so if you have a bad laptop or pc you can remove the installed hard disk, put it into the appropriate adaptor covering and then use it as an external hard disk drive and it will surely work just like a normal external hard disk drive, which can be used like a usb flash drive.

In recent times newer laptops/pcs has been installed with SSD (solid state drive) a faster and more efficient form of secondary storage for laptops/pcs but they usually come in low storage memory and serve as a means to host the OS of the laptop/pc, due to the increase speed rate of data transfer of the solid state drive they usually contain the installed OS when they are used along side the hard disk drive, in this way it makes the device faster and also greatly reduce the device boot up time. There are other variation to these, but these are the main information that you need to increase your user experience of a laptop/pc concerning the secondary storage – hard disk drive –.
